Each month CrossFit REP takes a moment to honor and interview an athlete that we feel embodies the spirit and work ethic of the gym.  This month, we are proud to recognize…

MS. APRIL: KATELYN WARSHAW

-How did you find out about and start CrossFit?

-I originally tried CrossFit my senior year of high school when I was competitive in Jiu-Jitsu, and my instructor wanted me to get stronger. I did CrossFit for 6 months before I moved to Austin. After a few years of college I was able to get back into it and found REP!

-How has CrossFit impacted your life?

-CrossFit has impacted my self life in many ways! Specifically, it has improved my confidence and self esteem. I'm able to think about my body in terms of what it can do instead of what it looks like now. My goals are related to gaining new skills and hitting higher numbers which has been such a positive change from my old mindset!

-What is your favorite part about coming to REP?

 - I'm a very goal oriented person so I love the fact that I can set little goals for myself every time I come to REP. Whether I meet them or not I'm improving every day! Every one here is focused on improving themselves and it's a motivating force!

-What advice would you give to someone unsure about starting CrossFit?

-In my opinion, CrossFit has something to offer everyone! Whether you're  competitive, love being part of a team/community, or have had trouble sticking to or finding a fitness regime that works for you then why not give CrossFit a shot?

MR. JANUARY - BOB GRAVES

-How did you find out about and start CrossFit?

- Years ago I was getting a smoothie after working out at a big chain gym.  The smoothie place had fliers for a CrossFit gym that had some macho language about how daring their workouts were and only the strong would be able to survive and blah, blah, blah.  So, me being me, I decided that nothing could be that bad and I would show them.  So, I signed up for my first WOD.  It kicked my ass and was hooked.

-How has CrossFit impacted your life?

 - CrossFit is a great community and I have enjoyed working out at a number of boxes in numerous cities.  It has given me a challenging outlet to stay physically active and blow off the stress of daily life.  A few of years ago, after undergoing treatment for tonsil cancer, I incorporated CrossFit into my rehabilitation.  The people at the gym were encouraging and the program progressively challenging to aid in my recovery.  So, CrossFit has become part of my life and it really is fun!

What is your favorite part about coming to REP?

-First, the people, from the other athletes to the coaches.  They are supportive, encouraging and give you that little extra push when you need it.  Second would be the programming.  When my other gym closed I began looking at gyms in my neighborhood and their workouts.  REP’s workouts are well thought out, doable and challenging.  Finally, the best part of all, you get to drop the barbell (with bumper plates on of course).  That part where you make a good, heavy lift, drop the bar and hear it hit the floor is just freakin awesome.

-What advice would you give to someone unsure about starting CrossFit?

 - Don’t be scared off by the hype. Some people I talk to are intimidated and reluctant to try CrossFit based on what they see or read.  They do not believe it is something they can do.  CrossFit can be done by anyone, any age, regardless of their fitness level or skills.  The workouts are well structured and coached and there are no death defying feats involved.  Finally, and most importantly, this stuff is fun!

MS. DECEMBER: ELIZABETH HORNING

-How did you find out about and start CrossFit?

-I first heard about CrossFit a few years ago back in Madison Wi. My best friend Steph was doing CrossFit and fell in love with it. I got to watch some of her local competitions she did and was happy for her but never seemed to fully interest me. Once moving down to Texas my roomie, Amanda, and I were getting bored of our bodybuilding workout routine that we've been doing for years and felt like it was time to change up our workouts and meet new people in the area, and what better way than to join a CrossFit Community! So we looked up the ones around the Domain, researched the websites and decided to give CrossFitREP a try with a community workout!

-How has CrossFit impacted your life?

-CrossFit has been such a positive impact on my life. Not only has it challenged my physical athleticism but also mental performance. I am enjoying my workouts again and feeling like I learn and grow from each and every time I do a class or any workout at CrossfitREP.  Besides finding my love for the sport I have met the most awesome people in the CrossFit Community and feel like I now have a family down here in Austin. From the very first time I stepped into the box, there has been a welcoming face that has made the experience comfortable, inviting, and wanting to come back for more workouts.

What is your favorite part about coming to REP?

-This is probably the most popular answer to this question but it's true: The People. The owners, Jake and Tim, all of the coaches at the box, the members, and even the visitors! Like minded people with positive vibes and high frequencies attract each other so it's no surprise that THE coolest cats in Austin are all working out at CrossFit REP.  Oh wait, also the fact that the box is dog friendly and you can catch THE coolest dogs in Austin hanging out there at all hours of the day! 🙂

-What advice would you give to someone unsure about starting CrossFit?

-You will never know if CrossFit is the right fit for you unless you try it.  Look around and research different boxes, their coaches, how they take care of someone who is new to CrossFit, and what their programming style is. Compare and see which one aligns with your goals and priorities for your fitness.

MR. NOVEMBER: MARC CAVAZOS

- How did you find out about and start CrossFit?

- One of my military buddies told me about it years ago. When it started being televised I tried it out but I wasn't able to stick with it. Before I moved to Austin I decided to go all in with CrossFit.

- How has CrossFit impacted your life?

- As recently as April of this year I was up to 240lbs and now I'm down to 185. CrossFt has reignited a competitive fire that had been lying dormant for years. CrossFit has expanded my awareness on health and nutrition more than anything.

- What is your favorite part about coming to REP?

- Absolutely the best part about Rep is the camaraderie and the community feel. Everybody is so awesome and that's probably an understatement. It's warming to be able to move to a new city and meet like minded people with a common goal and at no point having ever felt like an outsider or like maybe I didn't belong.

- What advice would I give someone unsure about starting CrossFit?

-To anyone unsure, this isn't a fad, it's not a gimmick. CrossFit works for the very simple fact that it brings out the best in you. You're never alone in your journey to better yourself and CrossFit does a phenomenal job of making information accessible. It's for anyone of any fitness level and any fitness goal. CrossFit is different from working out to look good, this is working out to move well.

MS. OCTOBER - ALYSSA YATES

-How did you find out about and start CrossFit?

-I've always had friends that did CrossFit, but never really thought it was something I could do. I worked across the street from REP and decided that was a good enough reason to at least try it. I was pretty much hooked after the first workout.

-How has CrossFit impacted your life?

-CrossFit has made me mentally stronger. The coaches always tell us that our minds will give up before our bodies will and that is 100% true. Their have been SO many WOD's that I really didn't think I was going to be able to make it through. However, if I just tell myself that I can do it and I am stronger than I think I am, I totally get it done. At the BVM competition last week, their was a moment during the 3rd WOD that I really didn't think I was going to finish in time. I was trying to think of excuses of why it would be ok to stop. My body was still going (barely haha) and I couldn't think of an actual real excuse. I ended up finishing with a whopping 30 seconds to spare.

-What is your favorite part about coming to REP?

- The mutual respect you feel from everyone. I'm never the quickest or strongest, but I am never made to feel less than anyone else there. The coaches do a really good job of making everyone feel noticed. Whether it's a "Pick up the bar!" or "That looks good!" or even a correction, I never leave feeling like I was just apart of a some group workout. Everyone really cares for each other and that is pretty special!

-What advice would I give to someone unsure about starting CrossFit?

-Just drink the Kool-Aid. If you are considering starting, you've already gotten past a really big hump. It's never easy to start a new workout routine so you might as well start one that is going to challenge you every day.

Mr. September - Richie "Nana" Nunez

-How did you find out about and start CrossFit?

-I heard about CrossFit several years ago but never really thought of it as my choice of physical fitness. I did the traditional working out like cardio, basic weight training and calisthenics. It wasn't until I met Keelee, my girlfriend and a CrossFit Rep coach, that I started putting some real thought into it. I saw how much it impacted her life. I went to a competition of hers for support and when I saw the athletes competing, I had an epiphany, this is how I wanted to get in shape and compete! I went all in and drank the CrossFit Kool Aid. .

-How has CrossFit impacted your life?

-CrossFit has brought me back to a time in my former "Al Bundy" years of playing sports. Playing football from the age of 7 through my second year in college, I made some of my best memories and forever friends. CrossFit essentially feels the same way. You're apart of team so to speak, a brotherhood, a sisterhood. When you're pushing yourself and competing daily against your peers and you see them working as hard or harder, it pushes you to want to be better. This has translated into other parts of my life. Working in the financial services industry is one of the most stressful but rewarding fields. My life revolved around my business with no outlet to relieve stress. CrossFit has helped alleviate that stress. For an hour and a half in my crazy day, I don't have to think about anything but what's in front of me. I simply show up and do what my coach tells me to do! My energy level has increased and my stress level has decreased making me much more productive. It's inspired me for the next chapter of my life as I enter my 40's.

-What is your favorite part about coming to REP?

- There are many things about REP that I truly enjoy, however, the coaching is what truly does it for me. The athletes come from all walks of life. It doesn't matter if you're there to just get fit, strong or compete at a high level, you're treated the same by the coaches. They all have the gift of patience and work very hard to insure every athlete feels a part of the team regardless of your level of fitness. This makes for a very welcoming environment for all. It's more than just a box, it's truly a family environment that all starts from the top.  With great coaching, a box attracts and develops great athletes! .

-What advice would I give to someone unsure about starting CrossFit?

-My advice to anyone thinking about CrossFit would be, DO IT! I was very apprehensive about starting CrossFit as I had such a misconception of what it was about. I was afraid I had to be in great shape to simply start. Meaning, I needed to work out before working out.  I was pleasantly surprised with all the workout modifications for my level of fitness. Anyone at whatever level of fitness, can start. A good CrossFit box like REP, will measure your fitness when you join and monitor your progress and workouts. Be forewarned though, once you've jumped in, there is no turning back!  Blood in Blood out! :).

MRS. AUGUST: SAMANTHA "BEE DIDDY" RHODES

-How did you find out about and start CrossFit?

-I was doing a bootcamp workout class for a few years prior to starting CrossFit. I felt that I needed to try something new to stay motivated and to continue to see results with all the hard work I was putting in. I was a little intimidated when CrossFit REP opened up in my neighborhood, but I decided I'd give it a try. I could always quit if it was too hard or too scary: but here I am, 4+ years later, still loving it.

-How has CrossFit impacted your life?

-I have gained a great appreciation for what my body can do. CrossFit has really improved my body image - how can I feel bad about my body when it can move heavy weights and complete hard workouts? CrossFit has also introduced me to an amazing community of supportive and kind people who have become some of my best friends.

-What is your favorite part about coming to REP?

- I know that every time I step into the gym I'll be challenged in some way. Even if I don't feel like coming to the gym, knowing how accomplished I'll feel afterwards motivates me to get myself there. I love seeing improvements in my strength and endurance. The coaches and athletes at REP push each other to do their best and go beyond what we believe we can do, and that's how I've been able to grow and get better each day.

-What advice would I give to someone unsure about starting CrossFit?

-I'd say what I told myself the first day: give it an honest try, and challenge your preconceptions. CrossFit is for everyone, whether you were a born athlete or this is your first time working out. Don't worry about not being fit enough to do CrossFit. Most of us are average people who felt the same uncertainty before joining the gym, but now we can't imagine life without it. The CrossFit REP community is one of the most welcoming and supportive groups I've been a part of!

MR. JULY: "SUPERMAN" BILLY URIAS

-How did you find out about and start CrossFit?

-I found out about CrossFit the same way most people have come across it. It's all over media and I have friends that do CrossFit.  I started CrossFit because I saw it as a stepping stone to become more active. I have always enjoyed seeing people perform the WOD and always wanted to try it. I have always been drawn towards a more physical workout where I am being pushed to be better.

-How has CrossFit impacted your life?

--I have more energy, I have/am losing weight at a steady rate and my overall outlook has changed. I have a stronger mental fortitude as I can push myself further and that stronger mental fortitude is also improving my mindset at my other jobs.

What is your favorite part about coming to REP?

-Well this is an easy one to answer, the Jakefondas of course.  It's the atmosphere of the gym and the people that I have meet their. The energy that you receive from the other athletes when you start that WOD, the praises that everyone get/gives once the WOD is complete even though all we all want to do is curl up in a ball and die. The way that we all push each other to do better.

-What advice would you give to someone unsure about starting CrossFit?

-Just do it, wither you're a beginner or a veteran and looking for a change to the same old boring routine than I would suggest joining CrossFit. The benefits from the friendships you will make to the family you are now part of will only help you achieve greater things.

MS. JUNE: KILEY HACKBARTH

-How did you find out about and start CrossFit?

-My aunt and uncle started CrossFit several years ago and ended up opening a box in Florida. They insisted I try it as they thought the workouts were right up my alley and sure enough, they are!

-How has CrossFit impacted your life?

 -
-CrossFit has given me a chance to be competitive in a physical capacity again. Since my time as a collegiate athlete, I've been searching for something with a similar balance of commitment, community, and physical challenge. In just 3 short months, CrossFit has opened doors to new friends as well as a revived sense of commitment and consistency in my life.

What is your favorite part about coming to REP?

-My favorite part about coming to REP is the fact that I know I will leave feeling accomplished. The sense of accomplishment after each WOD is simply because of the people around me pushing me to do my best.

-What advice would you give to someone unsure about starting CrossFit?

-Like many, I was unsure about starting CrossFit. My advice to the indecisive and hesitant people of the world is simple, just go for it. You might be surprised, like myself, how much you'll end up loving something new!

MR. MAY - TYLER ANGULO

- How did you find out about and start CrossFit?

I started doing CrossFit because of my mom, believe it or not. At some point she called to tell me she started doing CrossFit with her church on the weekends, and I figured if my mom could do it I could definitely do it. Once I graduated college, I started tagging along to the workouts and absolutely loved it. When the group  eventually fizzled out, I was really bummed and have been itching to join a box ever since. Finally around mid-March, things worked out financially for me to join CrossFit REP.

 - How has CrossFit impacted your life?

CrossFit has tapped into a level of consistency that I never quite experienced before. Long-term daily commitment has been a lifelong struggle of mine, but somehow with CrossFit I quickly broke past that familiar barrier. If anything, I keep finding an excuse to show up and workout. I certainly did not think I would be this committed when I first started, but somehow I have wound up at REP almost every day craving the workout. And slowly but surely, this habit has trickled into other aspects of my life and helped me become much more intentional of the ongoing, daily effort I put into things.

 - What is your favorite part about coming to REP?

My favorite part about coming to CrossFit REP in particular, compared to any other box around town, is the people. I sensed it from my very first community workout and it is ultimately why I decided to join. Seeing the same friendly faces each evening, sharing a laugh between reps, getting to know the people in the community … it’s such a great way to end a long day at work.  And everyone once in a while you get to see Jake bust a move. It’s pretty awesome.

 - What advice would I give someone unsure about starting CrossFit?

Give it a try. Sign up for a month and see if it’s for you. Sure, at times CrossFit may seem way too intense, too expensive, or way too prone to injury (at gyms with bad coaching), and maybe it is, but testing your limits with CrossFit sure beats the other version of you that would spend that time sitting on the couch doing nothing. I don’t think CrossFit is for everyone, but I do think a lot can be learned by joining a CrossFit gym at least once in your life. By simply being in a community of fitness  — where the people know your names, where your attendance is somewhat expected, and where there is consistent feedback from the coaches and athletes around you — you’ll discover the type of environment that gets results. It has worked for me; who knows, it just might work for you, too.

MR. APRIL: KYLE BODIN

*We want to give Kyle a special shout out.  In the photo above Kyle is shooting in a biathlon, using lasers and his hearing to aim, because he is legally blind.  Where there is a will there is a way, and we are proud to be part of your journey, Kyle.  Never take no for an answer!

- How did you find out about and start CrossFit?

 - When I started college, I didn’t know too much about working out in general. I started the normal four day bodybuilding split everyone seems to start out with and saw great results; mostly due to me never working out prior. After a year of continuing this I was completely bored knowing the same workouts  everyday, week to week. I looked for different routines and noticed the type of training we were doing through our personal golf team training sessions. I looked more into CrossFit and started to do this style training back in late 2011. Back when I started up until after college, my training was very off and on due to training for golf tournaments.  And now a year and a half after graduation and losing a lot of my vision, I am glad to be back at something that helped me so much.

- How has CrossFit impacted your life?

 - CrossFit has positively impacted my life due to its ever changing nature of the workouts creating excitement every time I come to the gym as well as the community backed involvement. Knowing that each day will never be like the last one always keeps me coming back and wanting to always improve. Also, the community that a CrossFit Box brings to each individual is unmatched anywhere you go; everyone cheering you on, wanting you to PR everything you do, and always pushing you to not quit even though we all think about it into those workouts.

- What is your favorite part about coming to REP?

 - My favorite part about coming to CrossFit REP would have to be the people involved with this Box. I was hesitate at first to come by and check the place out because of the size it was. I am glad I finally took the step to come check the place out. I love the community that CrossFit REP has built. Not only the people involved, but the attitude that they bring to the gym everyday. That feeling makes it something I look forward to everyday. I have been to numerous Boxes over the years and the coaches and members are what makes it special at CrossFit REP. Also, you guys have some pretty cool bumper plates too…

- What advice would I give someone unsure about starting CrossFit?

 - JUST START. I know I was extremely nervous stepping into a CrossFit Box for the first time years ago. In fact, my fear of what people would think of me kept me from going sooner, and instead doing my workouts at a normal gym or garages. Once you get over the fear of not knowing if you can do the same movements as everyone, or the workouts are too hard, or just trying something new, you will love every second of it and wished you did it sooner. So my advice to anyone thinking of joining a local CrossFit Box or doing their first CrossFit workout, is to just start. Forget what others may think about you, because in the end its really only about doing things to make you happy and enjoy working out with people who are so passionate about the same thing.

MR. MARCH: LARRY VALLELY

- How did you find out about and start CrossFit?

 - Around Feb of last year, I was talking to Wide Grip Mick, a co worker, about looking for a gym. My focus was to get in shape so I could focus on developing my dancing.

- How has CrossFit impacted your life?

 - CrossFit has refined my life in so many ways. It started as a hobby to support one of my passions, but has developed into an equally important part of my life such as dancing. My growth through CrossFit has had a heavy hand in me quitting smoking as well as the decisions I am making currently to better my life.

- What is your favorite part about coming to REP?

 - REP hands down has one of the best communities of people you could ever ask for. CrossFit is a great exercise on its own, however the people whom you'll meet at the REP is why I became so passionate about going. When you walk through the doors, regardless of your fitness level or ability, everyone moves as one unit. The community builds everyone up regardless of who you are outside of the box. REP gives you the kind of dynamism that allows you to accomplish anything.

- What advice would I give someone unsure about starting CrossFit?

 - A lot of people have a misconception of CrossFit. You do not need to be an athlete to start. We have a wide variety of fitness types and age groups at REP. You may just start coming once or twice a week, but after a while the community will grow on you. Suddenly you are at the gym everyday, getting gains and becoming the athlete you knew you could be.

MR. FEBRUARY: BRIAN BUHRER

- How did you find out about and start CrossFit?

 - I started CrossFit in the military where functional movement and being conditioned in a variety of ways was important. Not just running for an hour or being able to bench press a lot but to have overall fitness.

 - How has CrossFit impacted your life?

 - CrossFit has been great for me. I have more energy throughout the day and overall just feel better. I can’t imagine going a week without getting to the gym.

 - What is your favorite part about coming to REP?

 - I like the atmosphere and of course the people. I tried the typical gym scene before and everyone has their headphones in and pretty much stay to themselves. At REP, everyone is engaging and truly cares about each other. The feeling of finishing a hard workout is also a rewarding experience that is hard to beat.

- What advice would I give someone unsure about starting CrossFit

 - I would say give it a trial run! Anybody can try something for a week, and if it doesn’t work for you what have you really lost? I always put things into perspective by telling myself “Will it matter in a year from now”? If you try it and doesn’t work out then no harm done, but if you like it I guarantee that in a year you will be in the best shape you have ever been.

MS. JANUARY: THU TRUONG

- How did you find out and start CrossFit?

- I heard about it from my friend Anh. She used to text me everyday and talk about CrossFit. She kept saying that I would love it and that I should try to experience the difference myself. She sent her friend pictures to see how she looks different and in shape after 3 months. Honestly, I didn’t trust her at first because I tried so many classes at different gyms as well as having personal training. Nothing works the way I want. Plus, this program is more expensive and it is located quite far from where I live. After a month of consideration, I decided to give it a try and I don't want to let my friend down. First day, Jake coached me, showed me how to squat, bench press.....and that was a first time I felt sore for 3 days, I couldn't walk or sit down. After finishing elements classes with Jake and joining the classes with everyone, I love it! Finally I found good coaches and a good place to work out.

- How has CrossFit impacted your life?

- It makes me stronger, healthier and fitter. The biggest impact has been the change in my body shape. I never think I can have it again after 3 kids. CrossFit gives me confidence in knowing how to work out correctly.

- What is your favorite part about coming to REP ?

- Having good coaches, nice and friendly people, and team work. The program at CrossFit REP is spot on. The coaches are extremely supportive and always make sure everyone gets through each work out.

- What advice would you give someone unsure about starting CrossFit?

- If you want to be stronger, healthier and looking good, just do it! If other people can do it, so can you. Last but not least, I want say thank to Jake, Rose, Tim, Vincent and Bleu, Anh, Huy and everyone for all the help and support

MR. & MS. DECEMBER: HUY NGUYEN & ANH TRAN

- How did you find out about and start CrossFit?

Anh: A couple years ago, an old friend of mine asked us to try a community workout at CrossFit Valor, but we were not interested in it at the time. A few months ago, we gave it another try at another CrossFit box referred by another friend, but it was a little too far for us. Then I did a Yelp and Google search near our house, and CrossFit REP had all the good reviews. When I contacted Jake via Facebook message, he was very prompt and answered all the questions. My husband, Huy, was skeptical at first since he’s been a gym guy since 1994. However, I convinced him to give CrossFit Rep a shot. The rest is history. We’re go 4-5 days a week!!!

- How has CrossFit impacted your life?

Anh: When I joined in September, I couldn’t even lift a 35lbs bar above my head. Only 2 months after, working with all the coaches, I was able to lift 65lbs overhead. I really enjoy the community at CrossFit Rep, everyone has supported and taught me NOT to give up, keep pushing harder.

Huy: CrossFit has made a believer out of me. As a gym guy since 1994, I was highly resistant to changes in my workout routine. Since doing CrossFit, I have been pushing my limit every time at the box with the encouragement and support of a great coaching staff. I see my body slowly transforming after just a little over a month and I am in better shape now than ever. CrossFit with its formula of variety and high intensity = results!

- What is your favorite part about coming to REP?

It’s the friendship and the community. We like the fact that the coaches are working out side by side with us also and always provide helpful tips on “doing it correctly”. Like Jake always says, “it looks too easy, Anh, add more weights”.

- What advice would I give someone unsure about starting CrossFit?

Anh: I would say ANYONE can do CrossFit. It’s hard work, and it’s all mental. Once you set your mind to it anything is possible! You need to find a good box, awesome coaches….You will see the results!

Huy: Give CrossFit a chance. Once you do, you will not look back. One good example is me, a dedicated gym guy for over 20 years. I was skeptical from the beginning but now I am a true believer in CrossFit. CrossFit = Results!

MS. OCTOBER: CRISTINA GHERGHINIS

- How did you find out about and start CrossFit?

- A friend of mine is into CrossFit and she looks great. I wanted to try it as well.  I did a search in Google based on my zip code. CrossFitREP had some awesome reviews and it was in the right location. When I connected to Jake, via email, and asked some questions he was very prompt in responding and offering to meet with me.

- How has CrossFit impacted your life?

- Being part of the CrossFit REP family has helped me to be more confident, and to push myself more and more each day. It taught me to never give up, even when I think that my body cannot take it anymore—there is always enough strength for one more rep.

- What is your favorite part about coming to REP ?

- Definitely the people; CrossFit REP is such a great community! I moved to Austin not knowing anyone; going to the gym and working with the team made such a big difference for me.  The coaches are simply amazing. They are knowledgeable and patient, and they encourage everyone one of us to push for more. As Jake would say, “Cristina that looks easy. You can add more weight!” 🙂 and I love it!

- What advice would I give someone unsure about starting CrossFit?

- JUST DO IT! Set and commit to goals; you will feel and see a difference. It is hard to get started, but once you get going, you will LOVE IT!

Oh…one more thing… you will learn to love burpees :)!

MR. NOVEMBER: DAN RITER

- How did you find out about and start CrossFit?

- I saw the CrossFit Games on television back in 2011. At the time, seeing what those people were doing seemed insane. It didn’t occur to me that I could, or even should, be doing those types of workouts myself. Fast forward three years and now the CrossFit workouts seemed intriguing and I would try water downed versions of certain workouts at my gym. In August 2015 I pulled the trigger and signed up to be a new member at CrossFit REP.

- How has CrossFit impacted your life?

- CrossFit definitely makes you stronger, healthier, and fitter. But the biggest impact for me is that now I look forward to working out. I used to dread it most days and wind up doing it halfheartedly or find some excuse to not do it all. Working out at CrossFit REP makes me want to go every day.

- What is your favorite part about coming to REP?

- The programming at CrossFit REP is spot on. The workouts are super challenging but still obtainable. The coaches are extremely supportive and do a great job of making sure everyone gets through each workout. Every day there is something new and different; no two days have ever been the same.

- What advice would I give someone unsure about starting CrossFit?

- Just show up and try it. The first time when starting anything new is always the hardest part. It won’t be as bad as what you are thinking in your head. And it only gets easier after that first workout is over. Also, everything at CrossFit can be scaled to any person who wants to participate. Don’t be intimidated by what you have seen or heard about CrossFit, just come in and try it out for yourself.

MS. AUGUST: STEPHANIE VANCAK

- How did you find out about and start CrossFit?

- I was first introduced to CrossFit when I saw the games on tv. I was in awe of the athletes but did not put much thought into pursing it myself. But that changed once I moved to Austin, about a year ago. A group of my coworkers invited me to join their lunch CrossFit group. I was super pumped to make new friends and be able to have an athletic outlet during my lunch break. I was hooked after my first work out with them. I have been in competitive sports my whole life and it feels amazing to be able to experience that same competitive drive again and in a community atmosphere.

- How has CrossFit impacted your life?

- CrossFit has made me a stronger person both physically and mentally. I love constantly learning, growing and there is always more we can do to improve. I have not found many other areas in my life that push me to my limits the way CrossFit does. It makes me feel empowered but humbled all at the same time. Plus it makes you look pretty good too! 😉

- What is your favorite part of coming to Rep?

- That every day at REP kicks my ass! Haha And the awesome community at REP. I have met so many fun and supportive people. CrossFit is never a chore that I HAVE to do. I 100% love going as much as I can and being able to get stronger with this amazing group.

- What advice would you give someone unsure about starting CrossFit?

- Everyone starts somewhere. Do not let the lack of knowledge keep you from giving CrossFit a try. Yes its hard... but that's what makes it fun! 🙂 "If it were easy, everyone would do it. It's the hard that makes it great."

MR. SEPTEMBER: WADE WILCOX

- How did you find out about and start CrssFit?

-  I became interested after seeing a profile about the founder of Crossfit on 60 minutes. I was impressed with the founder of the program and thought it might be helpful to me.

- How has CrossFit impacted your life?

- Besides getting achy muscles and creaky joints, it pushes me to my physical limits five days a week. Last year I wasn't able to keep a promise to my daughter to go backpacking in Oregon. I decided this year to do what Indeed to do to keep my promise.

- What is your favorite part about coming to REP?

- I appreciate the knowledge and skill of the coaches and the thoughtful program (after 3 months I don't remember repeating a WOD).  Its always a challenge, even scaled to my abilities.

- What advice would you give to someone unsure about starting CrossFit?

-  I think just about anybody in moderately good health can do this if you're patient and conservative, take small steps and focus on daily improvement. I do my best to improve my technique, and feel like my strength, endurance and coordination are improving daily.

MS. JULY: JESSICA VERDUZCO

- How did you find out about and start CrossFit?

- Well, my brother was a member last summer and would talk with me about his amazing B-Boy/Breakdance instructor Jacob Hill and Box (CrossFit REP).  There was not a day he wouldn’t come home and sleep like a baby. He would always ask me if I was ever planning on joining.  Before he left for his fall semester he clearly looked in my eyes and said “How much do you want to bet that once I come back from China, I’ll be seeing you fat, depressed, and still making up excuses?"  March 30, 2015 to be exact was the first day I had pushed myself out of all insecurities, depression, and excuses, and had my first personal training session at REP. From that day on I have yet to look back and have not regretted my decision.

- How has CrossFit impacted your life?

- Before joining Cross fit, for one month straight I used to run 3 to 5 miles a day and had an hour session of cardio at Gold’s Gym.  I couldn't see any improvements and my knees would be killing me. As soon as I started with CrossFit I could see results in less than a month.  The pain I was feeling before was nothing compared to the pain I feel now, which is from good soreness :). Seeing changes in my body that I never thought I would have seen in myself keeps me motivated to the fullest.

- What is your favorite part of coming to REP?

- I never dread coming to REP! I actually look forward to every workout. My favorite part about REP is the community and how we all push each other to get stronger.  The coaches at REP not only guide us through the workouts but they go above and beyond to keep us seeing improvements. The workouts they put together are amazing.  If you are dedicated and work hard it would be impossible to NOT see results.  I admire their hard work and all the extra attention I get :)!

- What advice would you give someone unsure about starting CrossFit?

- Stays focused, committed and enjoy the journey! Once you start seeing results and how the REP community rolls, you’ll never want to miss out on a workout. DRINK WATER...DRINK PLENTY OF WATER!!!

MR. JUNE: KYLE AMBROSI

- How did you find out about and start CrossFit?

- Well, I had been doing CrossFit workouts by myself for a couple months. I would find them on crossfit.com, significantly reduce the weights prescribed, then attempt a diluted form of the WOD using the limited equipment at my work gym.  In the process I singled handedly got all forms of chalk banned from my Employer's exercise facility, they didn't appreciate the mess. At that point I seriously considered buying my own Olympic lifting equipment and working out in the garage.  This idea was shot down by my girlfriend, convinced as she was, that dropping weights in the garage would destroy the foundation. Although I disagreed with her assessment on structural engineering, it led me to REP, which has easily been the best decision of my fitness career.

- How has CrossFit impacted you life?

- I used to do a lot of beefcaking, (glamour muscles, iso exercises, you know) and I thought I was in good shape. CrossFit quickly painted me a much different picture. I learned what real fitness is, and I strive toward it. The strength and stamina I've gained since starting CrossFit is noticeable in everything from carrying groceries to playing ice hockey.

- What is your favorite part about coming to REP?

- Other than the people, because everybody is awesome, my favorite part is the programming. Jake does an amazing job day after day of creating plans that are going to make you stronger, faster, fitter. This sounds easy enough, but balancing out the muscle groups used, mixing high/low intensities, high/low weight/rep schemes, and not pushing athletes to the point of injury is not an easy feat. I love being able to just go to the gym and do the work, knowing it's making me better.

- What advice would I give someone unsure about starting CrossFit?

- Commit to it. If you show up and work consistently, you'll quickly have your own reasons for wanting to stay. Other than that, eat lots of good food, and buy a foam roller, you'll need it.

MS. MAY: ABIGAIL LUNDBERG

- How did you find out about and start CrossFit?

 - This story is actually incredibly mundane. I was working out at a gym that only offered evening classes and I'm a morning person. So, I typed "gym 78758" into Google and I learned that Rep was about 1 minute away from my house. The rest is history 🙂

- How has CrossFit impacted you life?

 - I'm stronger and faster than I've ever been in my adult life. But, more importantly, CrossFit has really taught me to appreciate my body for what it can do rather than how it looks. That's probably cliche, but it's absolutely true for me.

  - What is your favorite part about coming to REP?

 - Umm, everything - can I say that? I love the programming and the phenomenal coaches. I love working out with the people at Rep who are incredibly inspiring, welcoming, and fun. I also REALLY love coming to the gym at 6:00 a.m. to find Megan dressed like a Rambo guinea pig 🙂 And, of course, I love Jake's plethora of plank puns.

- What advice would I give someone unsure about starting CrossFit?

 - DO IT. It's not easy, but the people at REP will make you love it 🙂

MR. APRIL: JORDAN"J-REX THE BOSS" HOUSTON

- How did you find out about and start CrossFit?

- When I was sitting on the back of the bus looking broke, busted, and not to be trusted, I rode past CrossFit Rep. At that time I was going through some rough stuff.  A girl told me her baby was mine and took me to Maury just to find out that it wasn't (lol just kidding). But seriously I was going through a tough time in my life to the point of just saying "F*** it!" I need something something to take my mind off my problems and being at home was not the place to help.

- How has CrossFit impacted your life?

- It has impacted my life in many ways. Mentally, I am able to break out of my comfort zone and interact with people whom I don't know.  Physically, I notice changes in my body that I saw when I was a young kid in High School. My legs look more defined, I can literally feel my pecs in my chest tightening and for the first time ever I feel my confidence growing.

- What is your favorite part about coming to REP ?

- The best part to me? Well I can't say one part so i'm going to break the rules a bit and say the best PARTS of coming to REP are the Coaches. From Tim to Taylor and Jake, it's an honor to work with people who only want to help. Push you to your limits to where you no longer have any. Make you not only physically but mentally tough and I'm so grateful to have that type of comradery (I thought I was tearing up there but it was just an eye booger, one sec while I wipe it off). Next best part is the people. Man we have a lot of tough people at REP and I respect that so much about that because that's who I strive to be like. Last best part is the after CrossFit. Why? Because after we get our asses handed to us, it's the feeling of accomplishment. Taking 1 hour of our busy day to work on ourselves, to become a better person. You're given the tools to succeed so why not take advantage of that?

- What advice would I give someone unsure about starting CrossFit?

- Man the one piece of advice I would give anyone unsure about joining CrossFit would be go to Walgreens. Get you a big ass bag of Epsom salt and two boxes of Bengay. But Seriously I would tell anyone unsure about joining CrossFit is: “You build on failure. You use it as a stepping stone. Close the door on the past. You don’t try to forget the mistakes, but you don’t dwell on it. You don’t let it have any of your energy, or any of your time, or any of your space.” - Johnny Cash

MR. MARCH: VINCENT TENORIO

- How did you find out about and start CrossFit?

-I started CrossFit as part of a treatment program almost two years ago when I was drinking and using drugs and finally decided I needed to make a positive change in my life.

- How has CrossFit impacted your life?

- CrossFit was one of the few things I had to look forward to when I was trying to get my life back in order.  I  had all these legal and financial things going on and getting in to the gym was the highlight of my day and it has motivated me to not give up no matter what.

- What is your favorite part about coming to REP ?

- My favorite part of coming to REP is the opportunity to push myself and get better every day next to the awesome and supporting people right there with me.

- What advice would you give someone unsure about starting CrossFit.

- I would say if you ever have the opportunity no matter how intimidating it may seem at first just give it a chance. If you love competition and the chance to get better then you will be hooked.

MS. FEBRUARY: COURTNEY ROSE-FITZPATRICK

-How did you find out about and start CrossFit?

 - One day when I was at 24 hour fitness getting my daily hour of cardio on, the CrossFit games were on TV. I thought to myself "I could never do anything like that." One year later, after being totally bored with my fitness routine, and missing the social aspect of team sports (I ran cross-country in high school and college), I decided to take a sip of the CrossFit Kool-Aid. Life has been a blur of barbells and burpees ever since.

-How has Crossfit impacted your life?

 - Crossfit has been nothing but a source of good my life. It has given me confidence in myself and my body that I never had before. My former vegetarian-60-mile-a-week-running self would never have believed that someday I'd be able to pick up almost 300 pounds from the ground or back squat over 200 pounds. Crossfit has also put some awesome people in my life that I would not have met otherwise.  This includes my amazing boyfriend, Martin, who brought me from California to Texas a year ago.

-What is your favorite part of REP?

 - Aside from Jake's endless repertoire of awesomely corny jokes, my favorite part of REP is definitely the people. REP has a community that is truly difficult to find, it feels like a family. To me, that's worth so much more than a huge facility with fancy equipment. REP may be small, but it's definitely MIGHTY. The programming is pretty kick-ass too.

-What advice would I give someone unsure of starting CrossFit?

 - CrossFit is for EVERYONE. It doesn't matter what your age, size, athletic background (or lack of one) is, YOU can do CrossFit. No one is going to laugh at you or judge you, they are only going to applaud you for to bettering yourself.  Drink the Kool-Aid...

MS. JANUARY: TERESA HERNANDEZ-BECERRA

- How did you find out about and start CrossFit?

- Well it all started when I googled bootcamps 4 years ago and was introduced to a young professional named Robyn Pettinger.  She exposed me to a new way of training.  She was so knowledgeable and so enthusiastic that I got the exercise bug.  As time went on about 3 years ago she brought me along her journey into CrossFit.  Of course I had never heard of CrossFit and was so intimidated by the thought of lifting heavy weight.  So, I trusted Robyn to show me and a lot of my other fitness buddies to lead the way.  When we first started, it was so scary, because as I was into my 40's, I didn't want to do anything that I thought would injury me and set me back.  But as I look back, I can honestly say that this was one of the best decisions of my life.

 - How has CrossFit impacted your life?

- CrossFit had definitely made me so much stronger and more confident.  I look at where I was 4 years ago to where I am now and can honestly say holy sh*t.  I am so proud of my accomplishments and the life long friends that I have made.  Not to many people can do, at my age, what I can do.  CrossFit most definitely did this for me.   And yes so proud that I can string at least 10 kipping pull-ups together.  Yes I can!!!

- What is your favorite part about coming to REP?

- Most definitely is the people.  Hands down the best!!!  I tried to explain it to a co-worker about how we hold each other accountable and push each other to be the best we can be.  When you have great trainers like Jake and Tim, you can't go wrong.    When you find a group of people who are excited about fitness and having goals, you need to be a part of that.

- What advice would you give someone unsure about starting CrossFit?

- Go and try a class.  Go with a friend.  Try not to think about what you can't do and focus on what you can do and push yourself out of your comfort zone.   Trust me find a box that you are comfortable in and have great trainers.  Jake and Tim are so knowledgeable and I trust them to give their all to me, so in return I so the same.  You will not regret a day that you stepped foot into the Box, especially if you join the REP group.  It will be the best decision of your life.

MS. DECEMBER: LISA STRANGE

- How did you find out about and start CrossFit?

-My cousin owns OTS3 in FT Worth. He has coached me on my weight loss journey and assured me that CrossFit was the next step. I remember doing a little research before calling to make my appointment. Looking at pictures of athletes lifting weights and being awesome was crazy scary. However, I trusted my cousin and I made the phone call. He made me promise not to quit and here I am.

- How has CrossFit impacted your life?

-In every way imaginable; from what I eat & drink, to how I dress and buy clothes, my social activities, & most importantly how I view raising my kids. I really made the commitment to lose weight and become healthier for my boys. I want to be around for them in the future and teach them how to live a healthy lifestyle.

- What is your favorite part about coming to REP?

-The people are what make REP amazing. I am also pretty in love with being able to leave it all at the door. Shake off all my baggage and just sweat. I might not want to drag myself in sometimes, but I never regret a workout. Last but not least are the coaches - they are some of the coolest people I have ever met. Past and present, the coaches have always known just when to push me to reach my fullest potential. I have learned a lot from every one and they hold special places in my heart.

- What advice would you give to someone unsure about starting CrossFit?

-CrossFit really is for everyone. Every workout, every movement can be adjusted. Don’t let your excuses hold you back.

MS. NOVEMBER: AMANDA ERHART

-How did you find out about and start CrossFit?

-I was attending a boot camp and our coach decided to open her own gym. I had seen and heard about CrossFit a little and associated it with jacked people that are hyper-competitive. I remember her telling us about her new venture at the end of boot camp one day and how she wanted us to try it with her.  I just started crying behind my sunglasses. I had this feeling of, "I'll never be able to do that. I'm not strong enough for that. I can barely handle an hour with 8 lb. dumbbells." I will say that I became willing to try it out because of the community. A lot of my boot camp pals were going to try it too and we were "in it together." Over two years later, the people at REP are still my favorite thing about it.

-How has CrossFit impacted your life?

-CrossFit has impacted my life in countless ways. I have turned a lot of "I can'ts" into "I cans" or "Holy crap! I JUST DID THAT!!" I have proven to myself that I am capable of more than I ever thought I could do. CrossFit, for me, has made me stronger mentally as well as physically. While I have gotten healthier, stronger, and lost some weight, I have a more positive mindset and confidence about myself that I never had before. I always wanted to be an athlete and CrossFit has given me that opportunity.

What is your favorite part about coming to REP?

-My favorite part about coming to REP is the people. The people around you (both athletes and coaches) are so supportive, fun, and inspiring. Going to REP is seriously the highlight of many of my days. Even when I see a workout that seems daunting (let's be honest, that's pretty much every day), I go in there knowing that I'm going to get it done and have support and feedback the whole way. The coaches are cognizant of form and are always there with tips and ideas to help us get better. As someone who is numbers oriented, CrossFit is perfect for me because I am constantly seeing my growth in the weight that I'm lifting or in the number of reps I can do. It's very motivating!

-What advice would you give to someone unsure about starting CrossFit?

-My advice to someone that is unsure about starting CrossFit would be to come check out a Saturday workout at REP. It's free, you'll get an awesome start to your weekend, and you'll get acquainted with the space and the people. Ask members and the coaches questions about it. Everyone is knowledgeable, friendly, and willing to help!
